Born in a Hindu Brahmin family to Snehalata and Shankar Dixit, no one ever thought that this girl will make it big in Bollywood someday. Till date, one cannot spot any difference in her looks; at the age of 46, the lady still looks as charming and beautiful as ever. Dixit is one of the very few actresses who have left their career for marriage, and yet have made a smooth comeback after ten years. However, though her comeback film was not a box-office hit, still she wooed the audience with her dance moves.
Let’s take a look at her journey.
Childhood and love for Kathak.
Madhuri Dixit was not the only child in the family, she has two sisters named Rupa and Bharti and a brother named Ajit. She completed her education from Divine Child High School and Mumbai University. It was not acting, but Kathak dance, which was her first love. Dixit had a Maharastrian upbringing and started learning Kathak dance at the extremely young age of 3. She also received many awards during her school time for her impeccable dance moves.
Abodh – Madhuri’s debut in Bollywood
At a tender age of 17, Madhuri Dixit ventured into Bollywood with Rajshri productions` film `Abodh’. Though the movie didn’t turn out to be a box office success, Dixit was appreciated by critics for her acting. The glamorous diva played the role of a simple young bride, who is too young to understand the responsibilities which come along with marriage.
After giving few flop films like ‘Swati’, ‘Manav Hatya’, etc., Dixit went ahead to give a blockbuster movie ‘Tezaab’ – in which she was paired opposite Anil Kapoor. It gave Madhuri the much-needed big break in Bollywood, and she became a star overnight with her pleasant performance in the song ‘Ek Do Teen’.
In 1990, Madhuri was paired opposite the perfectionist Aamir Khan in the movie ‘Dil’. She played the role of a rich and proud girl who falls in love with a poor boy. This romantic movie became one of the biggest box office hits of the year. Dixit got her first Filmfare Best Actress’ award for this movie. With the success of ‘Dil’, she became one of Bollywood’s A-list actresses.
After doing movies like ‘Dil’ and ‘Saajan’, Madhuri Dixit was paired opposite Anil Kapoor in ‘Beta’. The movie is about how Madhuri’s husband Anil exposes her mother-in-law’s evil intentions. However, the movie focussed on Anil Kapoor, but Dixit managed to steal the limelight away with her flawless acting. The song ‘Dhak Dhak karne laga’ was a cherry on the cake, as it was termed one of the most sensuous songs in Hindi cinema. And what made it epic were the dancing diva Madhuri’s moves, which further made the temperature soar. She received her second Filmfare best actress award for this movie.
In 1993 came a controversial movie ‘Khalnayak’, as it was right after its release that the lead actor Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to jail. Even though this movie was about a criminal Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit made her presence felt with her acting prowess and tough screen presence. The song ‘Choli ke peechhe’ had become famous not only because of its notorious lyrics, but also because of Dixit’s dance.
Rajshri Productions` ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’ produced the hit pair of Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit on celluloid. This musical romantic comedy family drama went ahead to become one of Bollywood`s highest grossing films ever and raked in Rs 135 crores worldwide. It was not only her acting, but also her clothes – the purple saree and her green and white lehenga – which were super hit among the Indian women.
In 1997, Yash Raj Films’ ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ hit the theatres. The film, which had Karisma Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan along with Dixit, turned out to be a super hit one. Dixit played a young dancer, who finds her love in Shah Rukh Khan. This musical romance was the second big blockbuster of the year. Dixit received her fourth Filmfare for this movie.
It was in 1999 when this beautiful actress broke millions of hearts and tied the knot with a UCLA-trained cardiovascular surgeon, Shriram Madhav Nene, who practiced in Denver. After getting married, she shifted to Denver, US.
In 2002, ‘Devdas’ – a Bollywood film adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel of the same name – starring Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan hit the screens. The film won an above-average feat – five National Awards, ten Filmfare Awards including that for the Best Film. Madhuri, who plays a courtesan named Chandramukhi, does justice to her role. The song ‘Dola Re Dola’ – which is a duet featuring Dixit and Rai – was a super hit among the masses.
Madhuri Dixit is a mother of two sons named Arin and Raayan.
Madhuri Dxiit made a comeback with the movie ‘Aaja Nachle’. She plays the role of a choreographer who successfully saves her guru’s deserted dance theatre ‘Ajanta’. Though the movie wasn’t able to create magic at the box-office, Dixit’s dance and acting was appreciated.
