A day in the life of ‘Satyagraha’, the first day on the shoot .. awkward for the role, the dress, the character, the lines and wonder at each step whether what is being done is right or way beyond wrong ..
And many snigger and comment on the 180 films and 44 years that have gone before this to caustic comment on the nerves ! But whether they like it or not, this factor remains. It disturbs, it causes apprehension, doubt and uncertainty … but of one aspect there is never doubt or hesitation - this profession is where I want to be ! The presence on the set, the activity of busy crew, the enactments of rehearsals, the colleagues, the sound of the instructions for the start, the choking feel before the camera rolls and then … suddenly, from just about no where, the character slips in, surprising yourself at all times on how and where those feelings came from … there is no preparation for it, nothing quite like the rehearsal before … it is different, and it just comes - one of the great mysteries that have plagued me and I am certain plagued others as well ..
I doubt very much that when we hear the role the story the director the screenplay we all form opinion on how we shall figure in such scenario. There are perhaps little moments by ourselves when we may have spoken in isolation on the character we are about to portray, looked in the mirror, made a few expressions, delivered a few make belief lines …
But nothing or any of it comes to play when the camera rolls .. and that ladies and gentlemen is the beauty of this profession ! It does not matter what you are playing. It does not matter if you are getting paid for it. It does not matter whether the product shall be successful or not. It matters how one feels on set and in front of this magical camera that shall be introducing you to millions of people..
